SMU x Matchaya | Matcha Appreciation Workshop

Few days ago, we hit the campus of Singapore Management University (SMU) with a splash of green, hosting a Matcha and Tea Appreciation Workshop for over 30 participants as part of SMU’s Sustainable Week.

They were particularly interested in how matcha is produced, the environmental implications of tea farming, and how consuming matcha can be a part of a more sustainable lifestyle.

In the first part, participants were introduced to the origin and fundamental knowledge of matcha. They explored its historical roots and the pivotal role it plays in both traditional Japanese culture and modern health practices.

Moving into the second section, the focus shifted to educating participants on how to differentiate good quality matcha.

We explored the factors that distinguish premium matcha from lower grades, such as its vibrant green colour, fine texture, and the profound yet smooth flavour that a ceremonial grade matcha has.

Do you know that these qualities affect not only the taste but also the nutritional value of the tea?

At the end of the session, each participant got their chance to whisk up their perfect matcha under the guidance of our tea masters, turning the workshop into a hands-on, frothy fun fest.

Thank you for this incredible opportunity, SMU!
